Prayer, Humility, and Fate
Victoria Smith (H) English 3 Mrs. Parsons September 24, 2012 Prayer, Humility, and Fate In the story, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain is developed as a Christian hero through his reliance on prayer and his humility which illuminates the theme that God controls fate. Gawain is developed as a Christian knight through his reliance on prayer. This trait is shown when Gawain is lost in a storm and does not know which way to turn. Gawain prays ââ¬Å"Lord I beseech youâ⬠¦for some house where I may hear Mass devoutlyâ⬠(Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 157, 159).Gawain demonstrates his dependence on prayer through this quote because it shows him praying to God for shelter in the storm and continually saying ââ¬Å"Cross of Christ, bless me! â⬠(Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 761). Gawain is established as a Christian hero through this quote because he relies on prayer in order to complete his task because he realizes that he cannot do it on his own. Immediately after G awain prays, God reveals to him a castle just ahead. Gawainââ¬â¢s establishment as a Christian hero illuminates the theme that God controls fate because it shows God granting his request and granting him victory. This is essential to the development of the theme because it clearly shows God altering Gawainââ¬â¢s fate which sets the course for the rest of the story. Gawainââ¬â¢s humility throughout the story also establishes him as a Christian hero. In contrast to Beowulf, a pagan hero, who often bragged about his strength and superior ability; Gawain, a Christian hero, is humble, often to the point of putting himself down. After Bertilakââ¬â¢s wife finishes telling Gawain how great he is, Gawain responds ââ¬Å"I am all unworthyâ⬠¦to presume to the honor you ascribe meâ⬠(Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 1243, 1244).Gawain reveals his humility to Bertilakââ¬â¢s wife by not talking himself up, but humbling himself and claiming himself unworthy of such high prais e. Another example of Gawainââ¬â¢s humility can be found when he speaks to Arthur following the Green Knightââ¬â¢s challenge saying ââ¬Å"I am the weakestâ⬠¦ and the least wiseâ⬠and in response to Gawainââ¬â¢s humility, King Arthur gives Gawain Godââ¬â¢s blessing and allows him to take the challenge in his place (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 354).Gawainââ¬â¢s humility is essential in his development as a Christian hero because the Bible commands Christians to humble numerous times including the verse found in 1 Peter 5:6 which says, ââ¬Å"Humble yourselves, therefore, under Godââ¬â¢s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. â⬠As Christians, it is believed that God will exalt those who are humble. This belief is clearly shown through Gawainââ¬â¢s humility and success as a hero further proving the theme that God controls fate. Because of Gawainââ¬â¢s humility, and his reliance on prayer, God grants him success in the end and Gawain is exalted.

Managing strategy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Managing strategy - Essay Example However, the ever evolving industry of tourism in Europe has meant that there were several factors in the external environment that were impacting the tour operators. This report will analyze those factors using the PESTEL model and Porterââ¬â¢s Five Forces. PESTEL Analysis Political The major political problem that struck the European tour operator industry was the September 11 attacks in the United States of America. The debacle was not just detrimental for Europe but for everywhere around the world. One of the industries that suffered most was the tourism industry. The sense of fear among people grew and that brought a big halt to the number of travelers around the world. The countries had implemented strict policies on visas and entry of foreigners in their lands. Among countries, there was increased scrutiny as the after effects of the attack on the US. There was lack of trust because of the security troubles. Every foreigner was scrutinized. Policies were made strict and thi s was one major reason why tourism industry took a big hit after the attack (United States, 2006). Economical The attacks did not just affect the political landscape of the world but it also had a direct impact on the economies of several regions. Businesses came to a halt and export and import was severely affected. This meant that businesses were not making as much money as they would in normal times. Because of this, there was a severe lack of profit which led to businesses running out of capital (Beaver, 2002). There were a lot of jobs lost and unemployment was on the rise. The overall spending power of the common man went low because of which the expenditures on luxuries such as traveling was also cut down. This had a direct impact on the European tourism industry because people started become more concerned about their well being rather than spending heavy and travel and leisure. An enormous decline was seen in the amount of money being spent in tourism (Hall & Lew, 2009). Mat ters were also made worse when the global economic crisis hit the region in the last 2000s. The world became rife of liquid money and economies were collapsing. This meant that the overall economic situation was not healthy. Companies were suffering as well with many big names being forced into shutting down their businesses. All in all, it was a tough environment to operate in for the European tourism industry. Social The positive aspect in the external environment for the European tourism industry, however, was that the people of Europe generally liked traveling. It was taken seriously and people considered it as their passion. This meant that when political and economic conditions in the region improved, people went back to investing in their travels and this was something that immensely benefited the tourism industry in Europe (Davidson, 1998). Technological Technology had a big part to play in the European tourism industry. For tour operators especially, technology was proving to be a menace. This was because their direct competitors, who would be the hotels and airlines themselves, started selling their products and services through the internet. During the last 2000s, sales through internet surpassed all other mediums. Technology provided a more convenient and easy access to people who wished to book flights and tours. Airlines as well as hotels both were now providing packaged tours for their customers, something the tour operators in

The Central Park Five Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Central Park Five - Essay Example The Innocence Project reports ââ¬Å"that about one quarter of people who have been exonerated by DNA evidence made false incriminating statements or gave false confessions that helped convict themâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Worcester police use coercion to get confessionâ⬠). The question is how this could happen and what can lead a person to do something as seemingly crazy as confessing to a crime they didnââ¬â¢t commit. The Central Park Five documentary is a sad real unjust story, which shows how corrupted and unethical the law system can be with no circumstantial evidence and use of coercion. Five young boys were sent to prison, and lost their childhood because the prosecutor and the detectives wanted to glorify their career by means of other peopleââ¬â¢s lives and took advantage of the situation without a doubt. It goes without saying that this crime has been tailored in racial stereotyping with emphasis on the timeline introspectively to fit the crimes to the particular decade. While watching this documentary, first thing that I paid attention to was the fact that original investigators denied to come into the light. Certainly if we try to find out this we would here such phrases as ââ¬Å"no commentsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"it is unknown at this timeâ⬠or ââ¬Å"we canââ¬â¢t comment on the situation due to sensitivity of the caseâ⬠. Ok that is fine and totally understandable, but in this particular case it is obvious that the interrogations were orchestrated with coercion. From the ethical stand point in my opinion there was no, and this applies especially to the prosecutor Elizabeth Lederer. As Burns shows, the DNA evidence showed that Matias Reyes, the "East Side Slasher" was an offender who committed crime. The facts showed that he was an offender. However, the police did not pay any attention to that and preferred to accuse the group of African American and Latino boys of the crime commitment. They did not even pay any attention to the undeniable DNA evidence. Personally I canââ¬â¢t believe that the

Hurricanes Geography Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Hurricanes Geography - Research Paper Example As wind speed exceeds 74 miles per hour a hurricane is born. Hurricanes usually formed from warm water in the tropical region. Water is usually 800F (270C) in this part of the earth. In a year, four hurricanes develop in the Atlantic region and an approximate of sixty hurricanes rise from tropical seas and swirls through the globe. Coastal areas are the most prone to danger because hurricanes are formed in the sea. Hurricanes in the United States mostly come from the tropical and subtropical waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, the CaribbeanSea and the Atlantic Ocean. Some are small and others are large. But whatever the case, hurricanes are the mightiest of all storms. Hurricanes are natural phenomena that can be dangerous and destructive but is perfectly designed by nature to serve a purpose. It is essential to maintain the optimal warm temperature of the earth. Hurricanes suck up warm water from the sea surface to its eye wall and when it rise up it condenses forming r ains showers. These rain waters arid lands and alleviates drought in some hot locations. Anatomy of a Hurricane Hurricanes do not occur everywhere in the world. You can never find hurricanes in cold locations like the Antarctic and Arctic regions of the earth. Hurricanes start from storm seeds mainly from the west coast of tropical areas like the Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Small atmospheric disturbance occur that creates low pressure area. Air is pushed through this low pressure area by the surrounding high pressure environment. Warm tropical sea water transfer heat to air so it rises as it nears the center. It speeds up the acceleration of rising air thus providing energy for the developing storm. Hot air then comes into contact with cold air aloft and results into thunderstorms. If the conditions are favorable like locations with high humidity and hot weather, a hurricane is most likely being formed. Low pressure systems with accompanying thunderstorms are called tropical cyclones. These tropical cyclones rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. This cyclonic behavior is due to the earths Coriolis Effect. Tropical disturbance is reported for a group of thunderstorms in the tropics that are present for at least 24 hours. It is then escalated to tropical wave status when it reaches winds with 25mph moving in all direction. The time it develops circulation, thatââ¬â¢s the time it is called a tropical cyclone. Tropical depression is a tropical cyclone with wind speeds of at least 38 mph. When the tropical cycloneââ¬â¢s wind reaches 39 to 73 mph, it is then labeled tropical storm. Tropical storm has showers and thunderstorms that are moving closer to circulation. Hurricane is termed for the most severe category of tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph. At this level, an eye is developed at the center of the cyclone. The coverage of the thundersto rms varies depending on the intensity and wind speed of the hurricane. Source: http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/hurr/stages/home.rxml Hurricanes have area that is relatively cloudless and calm. This area is called the eye of the hurricane and it is located at the center of the tropical cyclone. The eye is usually 20 to 30 m wide for a storm that has diameter of 400 miles across. The area immediate to the eye is called the eye

Everyone can agree that a stable family background is most likely to Essay
Everyone can agree that a stable family background is most likely to deliver the enviroment that children need - Essay Example A stable family background, founded on marriage, and constituted of a mother and a father, provides the optimal environment for the child. It is the institution of marriage which provides the foundation for a stable family. Research has led to the consensus that ââ¬Å"Families based on marriage are, on an average, healthier, wealthier, and more stable than any other family formsâ⬠(Civitas web site). Marriage contributes to the stability of the family and to the well-being of both adults and children in a plethora of ways. It ensures a mutual sense of responsibility towards the children and the sharing of resources. Children have a good relationship with their married parents, mainly due to the time spent together. Marriage increases the probability of the children themselves entering into stable marriages. Economically, marriage is linked to higher income and thus, a higher standard of living for the child. Children of married parents achieve greater academic success, earn university degrees and have high-status employment. These children also enjoy better physical health, have lower rates of alcohol and drug ab use, have fewer mental health problems, are less likely to indulge in delinquent behavior and are at less risk of experiencing child abuse (Civitas web site. Factsheets on the Family). The traditional family structure, composed of the two birth parents, contributes best to family stability and child well-being. Single parent families, which may be the result of bereavement, separation, divorce or bearing children outside wedlock, fail to meet the material and psychological needs of the child. Children of lone mothers have higher chances of living in poverty and deprivation, of getting into trouble at school, playing truant, being excluded and dropping out, having adjustment and socialization problems, being subject to physical, emotional or sexual abuse, indulging in smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, of running away from home and of becoming

Two Career Versus Single Career Families Essay Example for Free
Two Career Versus Single Career Families Essay Families with two working parents are more common today than in years past.à The percentage of stay at home parents has been dwindling since WWII when women started entering the job force at a rapid rate.à While there are plenty of working families, many families still have a stay at home parent, especially with very young children in the home.à The differences between two career and single career families can be noticed in their economical situation, in their involvement with their children, and in their recreational activities. à à à à à à à à à à à The financial situations of families with two working parents and families with one working parent vary.à Two career households typically bring in more revenue.à They also spend less on utilities on average because there are less household members in the family during the day.à Two career families often have daycare expenses, however, but these dwindle as children age and attend school. Depending on the career of the breadwinner, single career families typically make less money on average than families with two working parents.à Utilities and food costs could run a bit higher because more people are in the home more often than families where both parents work.à A bonus to having a stay at home parent is that there are relatively little or no costs associated with day care expenses. Overall, a family with two working parents will have a better financial situation than a single career family. à à à à à à à à à à à Another difference between a two career family and a one career family is the amount of and degree of involvement with the children.à Two career families often have a difficult time finding opportunities to volunteer in schools or take their children special places during the week due to their work schedules.à They are restricted by their employers on the amount of time that they can take off of work as well, so they may have to rely on babysitters or family members to do things such as take the children to scheduled appointments such as the doctor or dentist. Single career families, on the other hand, rarely have these issues.à A stay at home parent has more time and opportunity to do things like volunteer in the community or join groups where they have interaction with other parents and children.à If school age children are in the home, a stay at home parent can volunteer in the school, get the children from school if necessary and even do nice things like take them out to lunch once in awhile.à A stay at home parent also does not need to find alternate care for doctor and dentist appointments. à à à à à à à à à à à Another noticeable difference between two career families and single career families is the type of recreation that they engage in.à Often, when both parents work during the day, they fill their evenings catching up on their childrenââ¬â¢s activities and lives in between cooking dinner and catching up on household chores.à They often restrict their childrenââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ extracurricular activities because there simply is not enough time to do everything.à Two career families can save up for family vacations when both parents can take time off. Single career families seem to have more children involved in more activities.à These families donââ¬â¢t restrict activities as much because there is someone at home during the day taking care of the chores; there is no catch up in the evening, so it is easier for everyone to do more things.à Single career families often do not take vacation because they cannot afford it and their schedules are full already with all of the extracurricular activities that the children are involved in. à à à à à à à à à à à There are advantages to both two career and single career families.à Two career families generally have more revenue and can save up for vacation time, but miss out on other valuable time with their children.à Single career homes have someone at home taking care of all of the necessary chores, so the family can enjoy more activities, but on average, they have less revenue to do things like take long vacations.à Either way, a family is a family, and the most important thing they can share is love.
